Technology: Good or Evil?

Throughout the years technology has been in the hot-seat, and society cannot decide whether it has been a beneficial element of our world. I think like all things there are pros and cons. As citizens of this tech-crazy world, we need to learn from the cons so we can alter our ways and maybe make pros out of them in the future.

Technology has changed our lives in more ways than we realize. Everything from our interaction with friends and family, our medicines,  our education, even down to our everyday transportation all revolve around technology. Now, many of these things have made life easier and more pleasing. We can now talk to our family and friends, who live across the country or even the world, within the push of a button; there is no waiting weeks at a time for a letter. Also, our medicine has advanced greatly. We now have vaccines that have reduced ,even eradicated, deadly diseases, amputees now have full functioning appendages to run marathons with rather than old, wooden peg legs.  We live in a time where a disability does not have to limit a person, because technology has allowed them to live their lives like everyone else. We live in a world where a double amputee veteran can run a marathon with no problem, and the little girl in second grade can finally understand what she is reading because her teacher was able to get the right dyslexia help. All of this is accessible because of technology. But like all things, there are consequences to the never ending advancement.

Whle there are so many wonderful achievements, the main victim of technology has been raw human interaction. No one sits with their family and friends for hours on end to talk undistributed. Walk into any restaurant and you can find that at almost every table, there are phones out. I ranges from the baby in the highchair watching a movie to the teenager or parent on social media. Family bonding has been effected due to the hand held devices. Also, if those devices were to be taken away or hindered in any way, there would be a tantrum thrown. Like the video about the pepper grinder that turns off technology, the teens in the video grew angry at first, but then the sad thing was the panic that set in. Teens are so addicted to their screens that they panic if they do not have it for more than ten minutes. We live in a world where a lost cell phone means the end of time. I have done this too, and I am not proud of it. Also, like the Nature Valley video, the children did not have near the experiences that their parents and grandparents had. While their ancestors played baseball with the kids on the block, built forts, gardened, and connected with nature, the children of this generation stay inside with their eyes locked to a screen for hours at a time. Kids these days do not have the same knowledge their parents have because they are not outside being exposed to those lessons.

Now, while I could go on and on about this, there is a solution if we try hard enough. As we get older and have our own children, it is our job to show our children life beyond the screen. We need to show them the things we did, try to sooth crying with things other than a tablet, teach them to love the outdoors or art. Let the screen time be limited, something they do not think about because they are too busy outside; and like my mom says, "a busy kid is a good kid."

  1. Wow, you had great input here! I think technology has helped many people and has been around us for a great time. The fact that things are more easier has made us lazy, but people with necessities should have all the help they can get. The fact that communication is lost between humans is sad. People need to find a way to not lose what our grandparents and parents had. We need to be able to teach out kids that technology is not the only thing on earth. Nature also needs us.

  2. Great post! I completely agree with you on the fact that there are definitely pros and cons with technology. I believe technology is meant to be for the good and benefit the world but people are overusing and abusing it therefore leading to the con side of it. Communication and entertainment are the two biggest areas that I see technology affecting people for the worse. Technology has benefited the communication world by allowing people to talk to others all over the world more conveniently than mailing a letter. But, it has also affected so many people when it comes to face to face communication. Some don't know how to carry on a conversation in person, only through technology. That to me is truly said. As for the entertainment side, the first video showed a great example of what technology has done to the generations over the years. I was one that grew up with technology, but also spent all my time outside. I also have children that are big on spending time outside. They are nature bugs and I hope they remain that way and carry that on to their kids. You show great examples of what technology has brought to the medical side of the world. It is truly amazing all the advancement we have seen over the years and that are continuing to happen with technology. I say technology is for the best as long as people set limitations and boundaries for the use of technology. I also agree with what your mom says about a busy kid being a good kid.

  3. Very well said! Technology has become very big in our world and I dont see it going anywhere. I think being able to talk to our family across the world is great, but i also think its sad that some people don't even know how to write a proper letter, and don't get that excitment when they get a letter in the mail from a family member. I do agree with you on that it is up to us to raise our children as we see fit with the technolgy that is available to us.

  4. I really enjoyed being able to read and understand your thoughts on how technology has changed our world. I agree with you when you say that technology has devolped many important things thatv we use on a daily basis, such as the ability to communicate with our loved ones far and near. I believe that technology is important to further developing life saving tools and treatments. I also have to agree when you say that technology is having a negitive effect on human interaction when we are surrounded by others. It is sad to see that people are no longer living normal childhoods surrounded by nature and other people, instead they are living within their electronic devices. I think it is important to realise the change happening before us while appreciating the positive things that come from the evolving technology.

  5. Totally agree with your thought about how technology has more positive impact on medical and educational filed than on the human communication. I think Einstein's quote speak to this point. Love your sharing about the solution for the technology use--it's not the end of the world as long as there is no asteroid hitting the Earth; otherwise, we will be fine--my comments for those who cry for no technology!
